Bangkok Day 2 - Grand Palace

Lunch
We found this food stall outside of the Grand Palace compound. It was resembling our economic rice. The menu was written in Thai. So, we just pointed anything at the menu and the auntie went on to prepare the "anything" for us.

Had cool Persi; relieved.
Found another tourist trap here - they were renting the formal dressing for the palace, but you could got the dressing for free at the entrance. So, don't waste your $$$ outside.

Grand Palace
350 Baht/person; opened daily. (the pants/long skirt, which Donkoi and I wore inside the following pictures, were free with deposit)

Grand Palace is constructed during the late of 18th Century. Even though the palace is no longer the official residence of current king, the 218,400 square feet area was still guarded with trained army. Outside of the 1900 meters of white wall, gardeners were seen maintaining the grass in neat formation. This monument still holds its old glory. Its existence speaks the grandness, the richness as well as the history of Thai Kingdom.

The Grand Palace is filled with building styles from 17th-century-Asian, Chinese, Thai as well as European. The Stupa and Chendi are the most obvious signs illustrating the old age of Thai Kingdom because they are symbols of Hindi influence during 1500 till 1700 time frame.

Many temples inside the Grand Palace are Thai-styled Wat with gold coating, wide range of different marbles and assorted colours of glass decorating each inch of the buildings. Besides the walls and pillars, the edge of the roofs are often surrounded by little dangling bells, which jingling whenever there is a gust of wind whoozing by. In addition to that, mini-sized stupa and chendi are always sitting on the joint of two roofs.

The exageratingly beautiful architecture of these 200~300-year-old buildings confirmed the historical fact - Thailand was the richest and strongest power among the Asean countries. During 16th centuries, the neighbouring countries, including Malacca Kingdom and Kedah, used to send Gold Leaves annually to the King of Thailand as a token of respect. Personally, I think that is their source of income to construct all these wonderful temples, admistration buildings as well as the mansions for the Royal Family.
