Yesterday was Hari Hol Almarhum Sultan Ismail

I had been studyin in Johor for 5 years. Thus, I've been privileged to enjoy a day off from my university due to this holiday. But, why the Johorean would rather enjoy a day off on Hari Hol instead of New Year? Yeah, New Year as in 1st of January. STOP staring at the screen. I'm talking about a "New" Year which people walk along the street to say "Happy New Year" without knowing you previously. *Sob* I miss it!

Talking back on this Hari Hol, I was curious what would be so great about a dying Sultan. No, he is not the founder. (Ha! I know what you are thinking.) To search an answer to my inquiry, my first reference would be 3 of my housemates, who are Johorean. Ha! These Johorean knew how to sing Singapore national anthem and remember Singapore's National Day, but they did not know what is Hari Hol for. Oh, my g*d!

So, I thought of serching on it on line yesterday and post it. However, I needed to prepare for my DSP test yesterday. Thus, the plan was posponed to today. Start searching ...

* FYI: My uni main hall is named after this Sultan as well. So, his importance in this state is undoubtful. *

So, google did the searching. Guess what make me dumbfounded?! Even wikipedia encyclopedia has a collection on him ... The local websites, which I expected to provide more details on him turning out to be some tourism homepage. Oh, sha*e on the stick and shit (use ur brain ... u will surely find out who I'm talkin).

Let's go to the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Ismail) ...
In full Sultan Ismail ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim, was the third sultan of modern Johor in Malaysia.

Born Tunku Ismail on October 28, 1894 at Istana Semayam, Johor, he was the eldest son of Sultan Ibrahim by his first wife, Sultanah Ungku Maimunah.

Sultan Ismail who was an animal lover was known affectionately as "Lau Sultan" among the Chinese community in Johor meaning "Old Sultan".

Sultan Ismail died on May 10, 1981 and was succeeded by his eldest son Sultan Iskandar.

Dear Johorean housemates & fellow friends who enjoy the holiday without knowing the reason,
1) The Hari Hol is a memorial day of deceased Sultan Ismail. But, why the date is so different from the stated MAY 10? For this question, may be I need to refer it to my malay coursemate. Or anyone that know the answer, please post it here by clicking the "comment" down there.

2) The current Johor sultan is Sultan Iskandar, who (is RUMOURED)went around slaping people for not showing respect for his mother. He was often at loggerheads with fourth Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. To find out more on him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Iskandar

Last but not least, let me put a thumb-up for wikipedia. The scope of this encyclopedia is really impressive. It can help me from my technical report to this piece of history. Keep up the good work! And, I'm glad to hear that you are still going to maintain your status as a free encyclopedia. Excellent!
