Anyone remember the movie "Milk"? The movie started with Harvey Milk meeting Scott Smith at one of the familiar New York Subway stations in the middle of the night. They brushed shoulders with each other at the staircase of the subway station. There was an exchanged glare between them. Then, they began having passionate kiss at the staircase. The next scene carried us to the morning after, whereby we could imagine the awesome one-night-stand they had. They continued to develop a steady same-sex relationship in the New York City. However, the nonacceptance of the society had driven them to make the decision to go west. The story of Harvey Milk had then transfer to the gay utopia of the USA, San Francisco.
Due to such movies as well as the popular song, Go West, I have been assuming that California has legalized same-sex marriage. However, California is neither the first state to legalize same-sex marriage nor one out of the five states that legalize same-sex marriage. Currently, four out of the five states legalize same-sex marriage are from New England (East side of the USA). So, it should be "Go East"!
By the way, there is a possibility that the New York state will join Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire to be the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage! It is a heated debate in Albany state assembly now. There are clips of the debate at the 10 o'clock news daily for the past one week. We heard voices of agreement as well as opinions from oppositions. The key point in the debate is how do you define marriage. Marriage should be between two mutual souls of any genders or it must be restrained by the centuries old formula - one male and one female? Personally, I feel that it is kind of cruel to deny the married status of two loving souls. Therefore, I wish the bill will be passed to reduce the stigma against same-sex lifelong commitment. After all, everyone has their own right to lead their life so long it does not interfere or do anyone else wrong. Don't you think so?!
